The journey begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel in Tirana. On the way to Pellumbas, we pass through Petrela village, where the historic Petrela Castle, dating back to the 5th century AD, stands atop a hill. Once used as a lookout for Ottoman troops, this castle provides a glimpse into Albania’s rich history.
Our main destination, Pellumbas Cave, is located at the heart of Erzeni Canyon, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and the Erzeni River. The cave, dating back to the Middle Paleolithic era, served as a shelter for ancient humans and wild bears over 30,000 years ago. During World War I and II, locals used it as a refuge. Inside, you can see formations such as stalactites and stalagmites.
The hike to the cave takes about an hour each way, with an elevation gain of up to 600 meters. From the wooden platform at the cave’s entrance, take a moment to appreciate the views of the canyon and surrounding mountains.
After the hike, there will be some free time, with the option to enjoy a traditional lunch in Petrela village before returning to Tirana. This trip offers a mix of history and outdoor exploration for those visiting the area.
